Lives Changed, Futures Unlocked: Your Impact This Quarter (2026 Q1)

Thanks to our incredible community of supporters, students with albinism are not only accessing education, they are gaining the confidence, care, and opportunities they need to thrive. Here’s what that looked like in the first months of 2026:

Primary School: Showing Up with Care

For many of our youngest students, school events like visiting days can be a painful reminder of absence. While other children are greeted by parents and guardians, some of our students are left on their own. This quarter, UTSS staff stepped into that gap.

By attending parent meetings and visiting days, they made sure every student had someone there to share a meal, offer encouragement, and remind them they are not alone. These moments may seem small, but they build a deep sense of belonging, something every child deserves.

Secondary School: Strengthening Confidence and Performance

As students move closer to national exams, the pressure increases, but so does our support. This quarter, our team worked closely with teachers to address academic challenges, particularly for students preparing for their final exams. Together, they developed strategies to help students improve and stay on track in the months ahead.

We also brought parents and guardians into the conversation, creating space for honest discussions about performance and progress. Students themselves took ownership, committing to stronger results and renewed focus.

For Form Six students, mentorship sessions provided both academic guidance and something just as important: confidence. Their engagement and readiness made one thing clear, they are stepping into this next chapter with determination.

At the same time, we celebrated meaningful milestones. Five students graduated from secondary school, marking the culmination of years of perseverance and growth. And for those preparing to enter advanced studies, targeted guidance is helping align their subject choices with the futures they dream of building.

College & University: Preparing for What Comes Next

The transition beyond secondary school can be filled with uncertainty but your support is helping students move forward with clarity and confidence.

This quarter, UTSS staff visited students during their field placements, checking in not only on their academic progress but also on their wellbeing. These visits ensure that challenges are addressed early and that students feel supported as they apply their learning in real-world environments.

At the same time, students received training and guidance to help them navigate both academic and personal challenges, equipping them with the tools they need to succeed beyond the classroom.

Career Program: Opening Doors to Opportunity

For graduates, the journey does not end with a diploma, it begins there.

Sixteen graduates participated in a pre-employment training in Dar es Salaam, gaining practical skills and confidence to navigate the job market. With the support of a career launch allowance, they are able to pursue opportunities without immediate financial barriers holding them back.

And already, doors are opening.

Internships have been secured. Employment opportunities are emerging. One graduate has stepped into a government role, while another has begun a prestigious training program that includes hands-on field experience and strong potential for long-term employment. Each of these steps represents more than individual success, they are powerful examples of what is possible.

Holistic Support: Walking Alongside Every Student

Education is only one part of the story. True transformation happens when students are supported in every area of their lives.

This quarter, UTSS staff conducted individual visits to students across all levels of education, creating space for open conversations about both challenges and progress. Alumni were also visited in their workplaces, where many are demonstrating strong growth in confidence, independence, and leadership.

For students who have been reunified with their families, follow-up visits focused on emotional healing, trust, and safety, ensuring that these transitions continue to be positive and sustainable.

This kind of consistent, personal support ensures that no student is overlooked and that every challenge can be addressed early.

Health & Wellbeing: Protection That Saves Lives

For students with albinism, health care is essential, not optional.

This quarter, students received skin check-ups, along with sunscreen and protective gear to safeguard their health. Encouragingly, all students examined were found to be in good condition.

At the university level, students also participated in health and life skills training, covering topics like relationships, peer pressure, and decision-making. These sessions equip them not only to succeed academically, but to navigate life with confidence and awareness.

Advocacy & Awareness: Changing Communities

Lasting change requires more than supporting individual students. It requires transforming the communities around them.

This quarter, UTSS reached over 6,200 students, teachers, and staff through albinism awareness seminars in schools and training centers. In addition, outreach in rural villages engaged hundreds more community members in conversations that challenge harmful myths and promote understanding. Each of these interactions helps build safer, more inclusive environments where students with albinism can truly thrive.

Moments of Joy: Celebrating Achievement

Amid the hard work, there were also moments to celebrate. Students who excelled academically were rewarded with an educational trip to Serengeti National Park, a chance to explore, learn, and experience something new. It was a moment of joy, recognition, and inspiration for what lies ahead.

Because every student deserves not only opportunity, but also celebration.
